Sod Preparation and Installation

  1. Set sprinkler height to manufacturer's specification. Pack soil around sprinklers and irrigation trenches.
  2. Rake entire lawn area. Remove rocks, nails, concrete, and other debris.
  3. Move excess soil into low spots.
  4. Water lawn area down for 15 to 30 minutes; let lawn area dry for half a day or overnight.
  5. Rent a sod roller. Roll lawn area in two directions with a half-filled sod roller.
  6. Rake entire lawn area - repeat any filling and packing of low spots (if necessary).
  7. Spread 1 cubic foot of composted mulch per 100 square feet of lawn area. Rake mulch evenly.
  8. Spread 2 pounds of gypsum per 100 square feet of lawn area.
  9. Spread New Lawn StarterTM or equivalent fertilizer at manufacturer's recommended rate over lawn area.
  10. Begin to lay sod out against a long, straight edge.
  11. Push each piece of sod against the previously laid piece and row. Do not line up seams of the sod pieces of one row with the next.
  12. Water any sod that has been laid out for 30 minutes. Repeat watering until installation is complete.
  13. WARNING! Use a sharp serrated knife to cut sod pieces as needed.
  14. Water lawn area heavily.
  15. Roll sod in 2 or 3 directions using a half-filled to two thirds-filled sod roller.
  16. Program irrigation timer to water the new lawn area 3 to 6 times a day for two weeks. AVOID STANDING WATER!
